SNOW MEETING MINUTES January 21, 2003 University Friends Meeting House Brian Mulligan and Marcia Mullins Co-facilitated Minutes by Eileen Heimer -Introductions There were quite a few new folks, including members of Voices of Palestine, and the Arab- American Community Coalition, or AACC -Refresher on the Points of Agreement (on back of Agenda) -Mingling with neighbors... -Neighborhood Reports: Jacqueline Passey from Puget Sound Students Against War; raised over $1000 for bus project(!), are getting credit for creating their Peace group Jean Buskin; passed clipboards around w/thank-you letters for folks who participated in the event on the 16th Jan. for the commemoration of the beginning of the Persian Gulf War Mary Hanson of GROW (Greater Ravenna Opponents of War); tabling at least 2 hrs./day at the new Third Place Books in Ravenna, Vigil every Sat. at Westside entrance to U. Village 1-3pm, spoke about Ground Zero's Civ. Dis. at Bangor base MLK b-day Scott of Fremont SNOW; tabling every Sunday at Fremont Market, event 9th Feb.- "Care to Dance," Contra and Swing Dancing, wishes to draw in the undecided and uninformed; throwing ideas around such as a debate with Eastside folks, or folks from KVI or Jackson School at UW Linda Ellsworth of Eastside Surburban Peace Network; singing at Crossroads peace songs, 1000 people marched in Bellevue on MLK day!! Jack Smith of Lake Union neighbors for peace; vigil every Sat. across from Zoo bar on Eastlake 10 30- 12n Sat. Oly. Snow; delivered package to all legislators Wed. 22nd including signed petition stating what Bush is attempting is completely unconstitutional, rally on Feb. 4th Linda of dwntn neighbors for peace; tabling Sat. and Sun. 12-4pm @ Pike Place Mkt, where there is lots of mingling with out of town folks! Karissa from Lake Forest Park; stated their weekly Sat. vigil ( @Bothell and Ballinger 11-12n) is growing very fast! Ellen Finkelstein of West Seattle; three regular vigils- Fri. at Westwood, Sat. at Calif. Junction (over 85 people last time!), Sun. at Alki Statue, also mentioned Nonviolence training on the 26th Jan. 12-5pm Queen Anne Neighbors for Peace; KOMO doing story, $700 was raised in 2 hrs Montlake; over 150 people @ potlucks, Conversation Cafe training at Elliott Bay Book Co. 26th Jan., 5 30- 7 30pm with Ross Reynolds of KUOW and author of Your Money Or Your Life Wallingford Neighbors for Peace; postcard signing campaign to President @ vigils (to make it easy for folks!) U-Dist.; has sent postcards as well Coordinating Committee Report Brad: re providing structure to organization; liasons have been appointed for the 6 divided areas to keep everyone connected, etc.; there was a generous donation from the Seattle Mennonite Church Fred, Mike Yarrow and Brenda are on a Committee to figure out where this donated money might go Next C. Comm. Mtg: 27 Jan. @ F.O.R. office Greenwood and 70th ( open to all) There are now over 700 people on the SNOW announce list, and 230 people on the internal list! Report on How SNOW endorses events (Work in Progress; Provisionally approved) Ellen Finkelstein reported: Three Levels: 1) General - This is UNMODERATED by SNOW; individuals or groups are looking for feedback only, not an endorsement 2) SNOW affiliated folks looking for ENDORSEMENT, meaning you want to take advantage of SNOW resources and name -Assumption that there is agreement with SNOW principles -Request for endorsement could be sent to Coord. Comm.(email, etc.) OR to general SNOW mtg 3)"SNOW-wide" event -Broad base of support (e.g.- 8th Dec. event at Garfield, MLK March, 16th Jan. Commemoration event) -SNOW resources utilized -Event is made a priority -Group should give SNOW enough lead time to prepare -There should be substantial support from community -Also could be brought to Coord. Comm. Note: Jean Buskin emphasized importance of noting WHOSE EVENT it is (e.g. MLK March was SNOW supported, not SNOW endorsed -Request for endorsement need not be submitted to Coord. Committe, but to SNOW general mtg, UNLESS timing is critical Next SNOW Action/Event -Note: This took up bulk of meeting -Brainstorming: -24th Jan, Olympia -26th Jan., Waging Peace/Conversation Cafe -27th Jan., NION and United Nations -29th Jan, Day of Answer -15th Feb, Hate Free Zone/Int'l Day of Action -23rd Feb, People from Canada coming to US for inspections/meeting at Peace Arch -Impeachment -24th Feb, National Sick-Out (or, if war begins, the following Monday) -Fundraising Campaign to hire F/T organizers -Mass neighborhood groups photo to be sent to White House -April: Greg Palast (at Garfield High School?) -More Potlucks for Peace -NW regional folk protest/arts fest in conjunction with NW Folklife arts fest (supporting life/art, rejecting death/violence) -inernet-based "Vote of No-Confidence" -More Civil Disobedience -Hunger Strike -Actions By Veterans for Peace in Bremerton Each person got TWO votes: Hate Free Zone 15th Feb. / Connection of Budget Cuts with war costs CAME OUT ON TOP Sign-up Clipboards passed around for folks to sign on to committ to start work on these events...
