DRAFT Minutes, SNOW meeting on 11/14/02, 7 pm, at Rainer Valley UU Church The meeting was chaired by Elaine Hickman, with Ellen Finkelstein recording notes and Cynthia Adcock doing minutes. NEXT MEETING:  Monday, November 25, 7 pm, Pacific Crest Montessori School, 600 NW Bright, sort of in Fremont (206-789-7889). MAILING PARTY: Tuesday, November 19, 10 am, at FOR, 225 N. 70th at Greenwood. 1.  The meeting began with introductions. 2.  Administrative Issues. a.  The next meeting place, date and time were announced (see above). b.  Emergency Response Coalition plans in case of (expanded) war.  Brenda will represent SNOW at the next ERC meeting, probably its last, which is 11/22, 7 pm, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 23rd Ave. and 65th St. in Ballard.  Mike Y. proposed inviting other coalitions (ERC, NION, etc.) to our December 8th event.  Present plans include marches downtown the first day and the day after. 3.  Reports. a. Educational Materials. o Ruth Y. has produced a flyer for the 12/8 event.  The leaflet will be available on SNOW¹s website as a PDF. o The committee of five is also working on an updated brochure for 12/8 but if no new text is ready by Friday 11/22, they¹ll reprint with the current text but new dates.  Printing cost is $400 for 5,000. SUGGESTIONS FOR TEXT CHANGES SHOULD GO TO HOWARD GALE at hjgale@yahoo.com right away. b. CD Support. o Susan Friendrich passed out forms on which to indicate people¹s desire to attend the 1/16 trial of those arrested at the Federal Building on 9/25.  With many sign-ups a large courtroom can be requested, facilitating outreach on the issues.  The motion must be filed by 11/27, so SEND SIGNED FORMS SOON TO PEGGY WOLF at 703 N. 76th, Seattle 98103. o Website possibilities. (1) Susan reported that our webmaster can post a sample op-ed media letter that people can Œsign-and-send¹ with a click.  Discussion suggested that individually-written letters have much more chance of getting printed.  The website could offer Œtalking points¹ or Œbullets¹ (really, do we want to offer bullets?) for writers¹ use, but no sign-and-send.  Jack suggested we e-mail the 175 list subscribers requesting letters and offering a sample letter, points to make, and media addresses, as well as information on the website.  Approved by the meeting. (2) The website can include an accessible media database with contact info.  This proposal was tabled for future discussion. 4.  December Event. a.  Summaries: Where We Are Now (1) Logistics. Howard Gale reported that (a) there¹s some uncertainty about what spaces exactly we can have at Garfield High (the gym plus some classrooms for breakout groups); b) Bob Barnes can do sound for $800 to $1,000 but Jeff (?) offered his own sound system for use. (2) Program. (a)  Large Group (1st Hour).  Mike reported that the plan is to start with music, then have people from around the state say what they have been doing or planning.  Then we¹d have a speaker on Iraq and the human cost of war, and possibly 2 speakers on domestic issues (an Arab on civil liberties? Someone on economic issues?) (b).  Small Groups (2nd Hour).  Fred Miller reported that these would be broken out roughly by zip codes and neighborhoods, perhaps also by special interests like CD, the arts, etc.  For each group, a convener or facilitator would have a to-do list, instruction sheets, etc., on how to do the various possible actions the group might choose.  The groups WOULD NOT BE BRAINSTORMING but instead PICKING THEIR CHOICES OF ACTIONS.  We will break into the hour and say "NOW start planning whatever you have chosen to do," emphasizing the urgency to do something before the holidays.  There will be a "corral of experts" available on various topics.  The intent is to start regular meetings in communities and let people know what¹s available to help, and offer a Resource Kit for various actions, including banners, tabling, vigils, cartop signs, affinity groups, study groups, CD, a neighborhood peace rally, poetry and street theater etc. (John Gilbert).  Team and block captains will be sought to start the process. ©  Large Group Closing ‹ Ceremony of commitment, mass pledge to resist or do CD etc., maybe writing pledges on paper white doves.  Collecting baby clothes to send to Iraq. (3) Outreach/Publicity for 12/8. (a) Ruth Y. and Cindy Cole will meet at FOR, get out info for SNOW member groups to send to their members. (b) Publicity to the 4,000 peace pledges we¹ve received will be sent out at the Tues., 11/19 10 am mailing part at FOR, 70th and Greenwood. © There may be a scripted phon-a-thon the week of Thanksgiving, possibly at the Church Council.  Mike will check on the availability of the space, 7 phone lines, etc. b.  December 8th: Making It Happen. (1) Coordination.  Ellen F. proposed naming a coordinator to work with Mike, who¹s in the office anyway, to make sure everything is covered.  Agreed.  Ellen was named to work with Mike.  SNOW folks should report to them, by phone or by e-mail to WWFOR@connectexpress.com.  IN THE SUBJECT LINE PUT "DC8" SO THEY KNOW IT¹S ABOUT DEC. 8TH  AND THUS URGENT!!!! (2) Fundraising.  The 8th will cost several thousand dollars.  Mike suggested asking $100 per member group and this was approved.  AFSC is giving $200, FOR $100.  15 Attenders signed up to ask particular groups for $100 and other support.  Committees (esp. the small-group committee) should get their cost estimates to Brenda soon, and she¹ll make a budget. (3) Publicity.  Jess will be on John Carlson¹s radio program 11/15, 4 pm (570 AM).  A quick press release will be written and sent out. (4) Logistics.  Jess and John will work on this. c.  Working Groups. We divided into committees for the Large Group Program, Small Group Program, Outreach/Publicity, Logistics, and Fundraising. d.  Re-Gathering & Report-Backs. (1) The Small-Group Program people requested the following help: o Think of resource people, ask them to serve, and report names to Ellen in the office. o  Help find facilitators for the neighborhood groups. o  Help find or develop contents for the Resource Kits ‹ info on how to do house parties, vigils, bannering, cartop signs, CD/Direct Action, making videos, letter-writing, finding meeting spaces, door-to-door canvassing, tabling, etc. (2) Howard made a plea for being well-organized, and especially gathering people who can organize in the neighborhoods, e.g. through house meetings. (3) Publicity ‹ We decided not to put an insert into Eat the State ($150 plus cost of 5-10,00 inserts). (4) No facilitator volunteered or was chosen for the next meeting. 5.  Announcements. o Fred reported that the city will keep 6 CSO jobs. o Lloyd Jansen, Green River Political Science Instructor, will speak on Alternatives to war in Iraq on Monday, Nov. 18, from 7 to 9 pm in Lindbloom Student Center at Green River Community College (info from Jack Bucher at 206-323-8325). o Steve Zunes (Professor of Peace and Justice Studies at the University of San Francisco, and a former Puget Sounder) will be speaking on Iraq and alternatives to war on Nov. 24th, at 7:30 pm at the Rainier Valley UU Church, and at 10 am will speak and join in the Seattle Local Peoples Assembly at Antioch University (6th & Battery).
