DRAFT Minutes, SNOW Meeting, 7 pm, 11/25/02, Pacific Crest Montessori School, 600 NW Bright Marcia Mullins chairing NEXT MEETING: TUESDAY, DEC. 3, 7 PM, University Congregational Church The meeting began with introductions. 1.  Administrative Issues. a.  Meeting Locations.  A sheet listing future SNOW meetings was passed around for people to sign up with possible locations (on which they should then follow up). b.  Finances.  Brenda Collier reported that except for Dec. 8 expenses, our money situation is good‹$854 in bank, with $625 having been spent on Dec. 8th, for which we¹ve received $650 in pledges.  The 12/8 budget estimate is $3,965. Even if we collect $2,000 on 12/8, we¹ve a $2,000 gap.We¹ve asked $100 from member groups, and $1,150 has come from individuals and groups. Not all groups have been contacted and Brenda will try to do so, but asks others to call as well. o Sue Davidson will call the other groups. 2.  Reports/Decisions. a.  Security Strategy.  Mark Jensen reported for the National Security Strategy Study Group, whose report was distributed on the listserve.  The intention is to use the text either as a full-page newspaper ad or as a brochure, but they want to distribute it on 12/8, which was approved by a 14-0 vote.  In general leafletting will be this plus the SNOW flyer.  Mark asked for suggestions for future documents, revisions, etc. b.  Emergency Response Network.  Brenda Collier and Torrie Arnold reported on the 11/22 meeting.  Decisions are made by a Committee of Five, SNOW having one member. o Triggers for emergency response are any of these: declaration or announcement of war, intensified bombing or US troops being sent to Iraq.  Plans are: o For the day of the event: a 5 pm rally at the Federal Building, each group with a speaker, then march to Westlake and back, hold another rally, each group with a speaker.  They are trying to get Denny Park for 72 hours, to stay there. o For the day after, a 7-day vigil will start at 4:30 pm at the Federal building, led by the No War Against Iraq Coalition.  Other day-after responses to be planned at 12/5 meeting. o Media Committee is being formed but outreach is responsibility of separate groups. o NEEDS: Peacekeepers tell Brenda or Jody Haug.  Centralized ongoing list planned. Trainings 12/1 & 12/8, filled up, but more planned ‹ call 425-482-3026. Medics ‹ tell Torrie if you can help. o Publicity ‹ Sara in FOR will do a flyer on emergency response, to hand out on 12/8. o Brenda and Torrie will attend 12/5 planning meeting. 3.  December 8 Event a.  Connections.  Mike Yarrow raised the question of connecting to other organizations, e.g. NION ‹ all of us should take flyers to other events, groups, etc. b. Where We Are Now. (1) On Site Work.  Marcia reported that we need people to:  direct traffic outside, monitor table set-up, hand out 4x6 cards, direct people (on entry and after large group time) how to find neighborhood group, peacekeepers if more than the 2,000 limit, clean-up, pass donation buckets. Sue  suggested a sound system to handle overflow if possible ‹ not sure. Childcare.  Habib has asked about babysitting for the event ‹ not sure, probably no space, but discuss. Tables. We also need table monitors to cover 4:30 to 5:15 pm, at end of event. (2) Outreach/Publicity.  Cindy Cole and Ruth Yarrow on outreach asked all to call everyone we know.  They¹ve done 3 PSRs of varying lengths, sent calendar items to 60 periodicals, and passed out hundreds of leaflets. (3) Program. o Large Group Time: Mike reported that Alice Woldt will be MC, warm-up is planned to include the Labor Chorus, a mime, clown and wizard.  Attenders from around the state will say what they¹ve done (30 secs. Each), and there¹ll be three short speakers: Dustin Washington on the domestic impact of war, Rita Zuwaida on civil liberties and Arab-Americans, Rich Gamble on the impact of war on Iraq. After a song by Mary Beth Saunders, we¹ll move to small groups, then reconvene with Rev. Zachary Bruce as MC.  We¹ll hear reports from the groups, hopefully have children singing, and at the end a mass dedication to commitment, as much CD as conscience will allow. o Small Group Time: Ellen Finkelstein reported that this committee wants 2 main things from groups: (a) A commitment to public, visible actions in the next weeks and (b) thinking longer-term about building their communications in neighborhoods, supporting each other, and coming up with a date in the next 6 weeks to plan something (for which there will be a list of Œthings¹.)  The agenda will be introductions, and then the facilitator will focus people on [1] actions, [b] community-building and [c] CD, including support people. o NEEDS: For each group: facilitators (tell Marcia) and follow-up contact people (fill out cards at the last moment) (4) Working Group Time (including inter-group negotiations about amount of large-group time for the small-group folks to tell attenders how to get to their small groups and what to do there). 4.  Announcements/Decisions. a.  Glen Anderson is bringing folks together for a long-term strategy-building session  Nov. 30th in Olympia. b.  There will be Neighborhood Group Sign-Making on Wed. Dec. 4 and Thurs. Dec. 5 from 7-9 pm at 2600 E. Helen Street, 206-322-8846. c.  11/26 there was a phonathon scheduled at the Church Council from 5 to 8:30 pm.  For others, calling can be done at home by getting a page of names and phone numbers from Mike at FOR. d.  Marilyn Griffin offered to print the yard sign on T-shirts at $550 for 200, including contact info. Approved with no Œno¹ votes. e.  the Nonviolent Action Community of Cascadia is starting an Axis of Peace Campaign to re-direct tax money to local peace organizing efforts (for more info, call 206-547-0952). f.  There will be Tacoma events on 12/8.  The vigil at the Federal Courthouse there is now on Mondays and Wednesdays only.
