Minutes of the SNOW Coordinating Committee

Date: August 25, 2003, 7pm

Present: Will Rose, Mike Yarrow, John Bito, Jay Gerring, Linda York, Ric Power, Ellen Bovarnick (Hiring Committee), Tish Korbly (visitor)

Hiring Proposal
Ellen and Jay gave their recommendation for the position of Organizer, Thomas Bernard, along with a copy of his resume. They were both pleased with his responses during the interview. The proposal to hire him for a minimum of three months passed unanimously.

Approval of August 11 CC meeting minutes
The minutes were approved unanimously.

Orientation to CC by retired CC members
Mike suggested that there be an orientation of the new CC members by the retired CC members (someone was hoping for hazing!). Will will ask Spencer Sundell to put together a list of past CC members on the website. Also, Will offered to host a gathering with past, present and possible future CC members on Sept. 21 at his parents home in Redmond.

Moving the two campaigns
John will check with Ellen Finkelstein about the status of the "Patriot Act" campaign. Mike went to 2 planning meetings for the "Bring Them Home Now" campaign. All agreed that the CC should keep tabs on the two campaigns, and that this will be one of the first things our new Organizer should work on. Also, the meeting information should be on the website and information sent to the neighborhood groups.

What do we do when Brenda (Collier) is away?
We need an alternate treasurer when Brenda is gone for extended periods of time. We can each look for and ask qualified people that we know, and ask the general SNOW membership. Mike will write an announcement.

Fund Raising
Jay suggested putting together a committee, also selling Dave Berrian's photos on the website. John reminded us that we need to pass the hat at general meetings. Tish offered to help, and suggested asking for regular contributions. The Fund Raising committee was born, consisting of Tish, Jay and John. Our new Organizer will be asked to conduct a Membership Drive. Mike will send an announcement out.

Proposal for a 1/2-hour National Security Strategy presentation at the next general meeting
This is the result of a group that was formed at the June "SNOW into Summer" event. There was concern that this would steal thunder from our newly formed campaigns. We agreed to have this presentation at the Sept. 8 meeting, and that Mike will talk to the group about connecting it to the two campaigns.

Agenda for the next general meeting
Will will find a location and co-facilitator, and Linda will facilitate the meeting.

Evaluation of Aug. 22 and 23
Ric went to Hunt's Point and downtown Bellevue, and estimated that about 300 people were at each location, along with a large amount of policemen (at Hunts Point). At Victor Steinbrueck Park, there were approximately 500 people. At the rally at Myrtle Edwards, there were about 2000 people. We did not donate the $800 as approved at the last CC meeting because MVP purchased their own equipment. There were no problems at any location.

National NION Event
There will be a protest on Oct. 5 - the time and location have not yet been announced.

Endorsement request
We had a request to endorse the "Circles of Hope, Community Reflection and Renewal" event on Sept. 10 at 7pm at the Downtown Bellevue Park, and Sept. 11 at the Seattle Center. This event is in remembrance of those whose lives were lost and those whose lives were forever changed by 9/11, and for all victims of violence. This was passed to endorse unanimously.

The next CC meeting will be Sept. 15 at 7:00pm.
