Minutes of the SNOW Coordinating Committee

Date: Monday, November 10, 2003

Present: Mike Yarrow (facilitating), Ric Power, Linda York, Mary Hansen, Elizabeth Brant, Brenda Collier (treasurer), Tom Barnard (organizer), John Bito (outgoing CC member), Tom Harriman (guest)

Fund Raising Idea

Tom Harriman came to this committee with a suggestion to put on a fund-raising concert with local musicians in January. He would do all of the coordination, and would want volunteers from SNOW. This event could draw anywhere from 200 to 1000 people depending upon advertising and venue, with a ticket price of $10 - $20. Linda proposed that Tom develop a plan for the concert for final approval by the CC. It was unanimously approved.

Webmaster

John reported on his discussion with Spencer Sundell about reducing his paid hours. He will accept 5 paid hours a week and is also willing to volunteer additional time to continue working as the Webmaster. A volunteer technical committee can be created to help him as needed. Mike proposed that we pay him for 5 hours a week and see if that is workable. It passed unanimously.

Minutes

The minutes of the October 27 CC meeting were approved unanimously.

New Members

The committee welcomed two new CC members: Mary Hansen (replacing John Bito) and Elizabeth Brant (replacing Jay Gerring).

Financial Report

Brenda presented the financial report, and pointed out that we need a minimum of $3000.00 per month to continue with current obligations. Several ideas were discussed: pledges, major donors, sales/donations, grants, neighborhood fund raising events and door to door canvassing. We should continue to sell cards as appropriate. Both the cards with Iraqi people and Tiffany's cards are a big hit.

Patriot Act Campaign Status

Mike said that he went to the King County Council meeting today. There were about 40 - 50 people there, and several gave very powerful testimonies.

NION Protest at Fort Lewis on Nov. 15

Tom reported that Margo Hyatt with NION requested our endorsement and possible participation. She indicated it would be a "quiet" protest with signs and a small group of speakers. Mary moved that we endorse it and Tom be one of the speakers, and that we put it on our website. This was unanimously endorsed.

By-laws Change Status

Brenda presented the summary of the changes that we recommended in our last meeting.

US Out, UN In Campaign Status

Mike expressed the group's discouragement about the UN giving the US a fig leaf. The concern for people's desire for peace resulted in several suggestions listed and titled "Reclaiming the Holidays for Peace with Iraq". This one-page handout is available for tabling. Also, he informed the committee that two noted Iraqi women, who are willing to speak to Americans, will be in Seattle Dec. 20 - 24, and we would like to find a place for them to speak.

Next CC and General Meetings

Linda reminded the committee that we need to plan the next general meeting. It will be on Nov. 17, and Marcia is trying to find a location. Discussion followed about changing places or keeping it in the same location. We decided we would continue to change the location to make it easier for people to get to the meeting when it is in their area. We agreed that this committee should be consistent about the scheduling of the meetings. The next general meeting after Nov. 17 will be Dec. 8. Agenda items will include: Status of the By-law changes, the Patriot Act Campaign, and Schools and Military Recruitment. The next CC meeting will be Nov. 24.
